Keyboard Fundamentals – 6th Edition
James Lyke, Denise Edwards, Geoffrey Haydon, Ronald Chioldi, and Lee Evans
This book provides the beginning adult piano student with the basics of reading, rhythm, technic, solo and ensemble playing. The materials are unified in a progressive manner. Instructors will find the organization of the chapters makes for easy planning, assigning and evaluating. The book emphasizes musical understanding.
With this 6th edition, we welcome new co-author, Lee Evans, noted composer and arranger who teaches at Pace University in New York City. For each of the six chapters, Dr. Evans has composed a “challenge piece.” In addition, he introduces the principles of composing and gives background reading, musical examples and short assignments that eventually lead the student toward composing simple pieces. This book, with its comprehensive approach to keyboard musicianship, leads the student to becoming an independent learner. Musical elements introduced in each chapter are followed through with studies in sight reading, harmony (chord patterns and melody harmonization), improvisation and written work. Solo and ensemble playing are an important part of study as well as short technical studies. Appendix C features holiday music in solo and ensemble arrangements. Lead sheets of Christmas and Hanukkah melodies are included for harmonization purposes.
Requests from college and university instructors teaching beginner classes for adults has resulted in a one-book format rather than two smaller volumes. Keyboard Fundamentals also works very well for teens and adults taking individual lessons. Upon completion of this book, students will have acquired a solid background in musicianship skills as well as performing skills. They will be prepared for more advanced study.
The CD, orchestrated by Dr. Geoffrey Haydon, provides attractive accompaniments for selected solos and all ensemble pieces as well as some technical patterns such as tetrachord scales. Each CD has both audio tracks and embedded standard MIDI files in General MIDI format.
